Photo 1 Rule of Thirds Assignment

In class you learned about SIMPLICITY and RULE OF THIRDS.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT:
*Take 10 verticals and 10 horizontal photos [20 total] using simplicity and the rule of thirds.
* Make sure you pick a subject. If you don't know what and why you're taking a picture, your viewer won't know either!
* Don't just look at your subject. Make sure your background is simple and nice. Don't take a photo of your sister with your couch, the kitchen, your dog, your PS3, ect in the background. Eliminate everything unimportant in your photo so you can focus on your subject.
* Set your camera up so your rule of thirds grid shows on your LCD screen. Make sure to put as many things as possible, especially your subject, on the lines and intersections of your grid. Remember where the lines cross are the best places to put your main subject. This is were your eye is led to first, so make sure there is something interesting to look at.
* I gave you all a handout. Make sure you keep it. You will not get another one!

January 26th Substitute Lesson

Ok class I'm sorry that I am gone once again. Turns out January is one crazy month. [be very respectful and kind you your sub!] I have the entire assignment listed for you below. Read carefully. I'll be checking it off on Monday along with YOUR SCAVENGER HUNT ASSIGNMENT! [hint hint don't forget]


The first part of class you will be using your sketching talents around the building. We are going to start talking about composition. I want you to get a head start on it. Your assignment is to go around the school, inside our out, [BUT STAY ON CAMPUS] and make a hand camera with your hands. You'll look through your awesome fake camera and find a good compositon, something that you think looks nice. After you find that composition you will need to sketch that composition in your binders [if you don't have your binders yet use your notebooks] You need 10 different compositional sketches. They need to look decent. I should be able to tell what everything is so do not scribble! You will have about 30-45 minutes to go around the school and sketch. You MAY NOT go into any classrooms and you must be quiet in the halls and respectful to other classes by not being loud and annoying. You may sketch people, places, or objects, whatever you think makes a good composition. Examples below.....

 Make a box out of your fingers.

Move your hands around until you find something with a good composition. SOMETHING THAT LOOKS GOOD AND INTERESTING! Then you STOP AND SKETCH. Do this 10 times. You should have 4 sketches per page. Make them take up the entire space. No little 1 inch sketches.

If you finish early come back to class and get started on some photoshop tutorials. I know you are probably sick of those "getting started" videos, but you need to be able to edit your images without using those videos. Next class I will make you edit an image using the techniques from one of these videos and I expect you to be able to do it without any help. If you feel like you remember everything then edit them all without help. Then get the video out if you need help. You should be able to completely edit all the pictures without help. Or at least that is the ending goal.

Assignment:

1.   Think about what you are taking a picture of. Set up your photo. Think about composition.

2.   30 NEW pictures

3.   DO NOT take pictures of another picture or drawing.

Set the date on your camera but take the date off your pictures.

No previous taken pictures are acceptable. Take all pictures in color.

1.    Feet and/or shoes- 2 different photos

2.    Hands and/or paws- 2 different photos

3.    Something about you. [what you like, hobbies, ect.]- 2 different pictures

4.    Water [one large like a pond or a stream]- 3 pictures

7.    Friends- 2 pictures

8.    Landscapes- [3 different scenes] – 3 pictures

Photography 1 FINAL.... finally

This is your last photo 1 assignment! Wow it's finally over right. Here is all the info/peramiters for your one and only last assignment.

Your assignment is to pick any photographer your heart desires. Make sure that you pick someone that you think is interesting and that you would want to use as inspiration for your own photography. Not only will you study out a certain photographer and their style, but then you will take 4 great photos representing their style.

Everything you need to know about the assignment...

*Pick one photgrapher to research

*Take 4 great photos replicating or representing your photogreaphers style.

         [your photos are due Monday or Tuesday January 9th or 10th]

* Write one page double spaced or one half page single spaced about your photograepher.

           DO NOT change the margine

           DO NOT create a huge heading with your name and title to take up space

           MAKE SURE to write in complete sentences, have correct spelling, grammer, and punctuation.

*Create a Power Point to present in class. [presentation must be 5 minutes]

    2-3 slides of information on photorapher. [their life, style, anything you actually think is interesting]

    1-2 slides on why you personally like this photographer. What you would like to take from their style and add to yours.

    5-7 slides of examples of their photography

    2-4 slides of all 4 photos you took representing your photographers style.

Remember you will only have this week to work on these in class so use your time wisely! You will be assigned a day to present next Monday-Thursday January 9th-12th. If you are not prepared or present in class the day you are assigned you will receive a ZERO on the final. [Unless you are school excused or have a doctors note. Other than that, NO EXCEPTIONS] We only have a small amount of time to get these presentations finished and cannot have everyone present the last day.

Abstract HOMEWORK Assignmnet

Your assignment is to take 10 wonderfully amazing abstract photos. They can be focused on line, shape, color, texture, close-ups, whatever you want. Now that you've had practice in class in your groups you should feel confident enough to take these on your own.

1st period: Tuesday December 20th
5th, 6th, 8th period: Monday December 19th

Utah Photographer Group Project

It's time to work on a group project!

The assignment:

You will get into the groups I assigned on Wednesday. Stay in those groups. I remember where I put you!

As a group search for a Utah Photographer. DO NOT use someone you know! DO NOT use a business! Pick one person.When you have all agreed on a photographer this is what you need to do.

* Write a page report on the photographer. Things you could include would be:

   Bio of photographer

   Why they are a good photographer

   About their photos

      Design + Composition

      Why you like thir work

      Photographers inspiration

   At the end I want you to tell me why this individual is an artist and not just a person with a camera. What makes it art?

* Create a powerpoint. It should include:

   Information on the artist

   Photographs that show the artist tallent and style

MAKE THESE INTERESTING! You will be presenting these to your class next week. No one wants to here a monotone speech with a boring powerpoint. Make it interesting!

You will be graded on your presentation as well as you paper that you will turn in after you present! 

Photograhy 1 FINAL Project

Can you believe that it's already the end of the semester? I can't. You will be happy to know that you only have one more assignment. But don't put it off because it's a big one!

The assignment

PART 1
You will turning in 10 photos total. The first 5 pictures will be your Best five pictures that you've taken this semester. I will not accept pictures from the summer or last year. They have to be from September until now. You should have around 50-65 pictures to choose from. I will be grading on the principles that I've taught you this quarter. Those are:

RULE OF THIRDS
interesting perspectives [birds eye, worm eye, ect]
CREATIVITY
lines [verticle, horizontal, diagonal]
color


PART 2
The second 5 photos will be new pictures. I've given you from Oct.13th until Oct. 24th/25th to work on these pictures. These pictures should show me what you have learned from the class as a whole. You don't have a lot of pictures to take, but they must be good. I will be grading hard. Creativity and rule of thirds are a must! I will not grade pictures that are fuzzy and out of focus. You should be beyond that point, especially for a final. Just because you only have to turn in 5 photos does not mean you should only be taking 5 photos. That means you turn in you best 5.

This week before fall break you will have time in class to redo assignments and get everything turned in. This is also a good time to look over you photos from the quarter and think about what images you want to turn in. I will also be here to answer questions about what picture is better and such.

This final assignment is due on October 24th and 25th. No exceptions!!!!!!!

That means if you didn't get it in I do NOT want to hear you excuses. I won't listen. You either did it or you didn't.

Color

Today, October 5th and tomorrow October 6th you will be learning about color. In class we went over a powerpoint that we discussed and took notes on. If you were not in class It is your responsibility to get those notes from someone in class and copy them down. Next week I will be giving you a quiz on these terms. I will be asking for definitions and also be giving senarios and you will tell me the correct actions to take. You will also be needing these notes for the in class assignment and your homework assignments throughout the next week.

Your assignment

You need to turn in...
4 photos demonstrating the monochromatic color scheme
4 photos demonstrating the complementary color scheme and
4 photos demonstrating the analagous color scheme

For example, if I was taking monochromatic pictures I might take a picture at Bear Lake showing the blue shy and blue water. I could take a picture of a bowl of garden tomatoes, or of my turquoise sea glass. If I was taking complementary color photos I could take a picture of the orange fall leaves and the blue sky. For the analagous photos I could take a pictre of red, red-violet, and violet flowers in my front yard.

A few things to remember

* Your monochromatic and analagous photos must be 80% of your selected color. So 80% blue or yellow or blue-green with your primary photos and that your 3 colors chosen for your analagous images are 80% those colors.

* When you are shooting your complimentary photos focus on one color and use the other color as an accent. If you have 50% orange and 50% blue in your photo your eye will not know where to go and you will bounce around the image. Instead take of photo with mainly one color and then use its compliment for empasis. If I were using green and red I could take a picutre of a tomatoe plant. I would focus the majority on the green plant and then have one or two tomatoes popping out in the picture.

* Always make sure what you are photographic is interesting. I do not want to see people take pictures of your friends orange shirt and tell me that's your monochromatic photo. It has to be interesting and follow the rules of composition that we have talked about in class. I promise this will be easier than you think!

This is the last Homework assignment for the name project. 4 more pictures are due Monday + Tuesday whichever day you have this class. If you would like to be homework free for the weekend come in during EO on Thursday morning or if you have class Thursday show me then. Wouldn't that be much easier anyways! Sept. 20th + 21st Photo 1 assignment

The NAME Project

We are starting a new assignment. You will be spelling you name using natural objects you see around you. You must use your first name. No nicknames.

A few things about the assignment...

1. The letters you photograph must be "nautrally occurring" This means you cannot break a tree branch and spell out all the letters in your name. This is not natural.

2. You may not create the letters.

3. You may not take pictures of letters. No taking photos of billboards or signs zooming in on certain letters!


What is due for the 22nd and 23rd?

You must take 3 photos of any letters in your name. Since I am only assigning 3 instead of 12 I expect you to put some thought into your pictures. Always photograph things that interest you. I want to be able to learn about you when I see the photos of your name! So put some thought and energy into this assignment and come ready and prepared for Thursday and Friday!
